South Africa Power Substation Lightning Protection Upgrade
Client Background
A major regional power utility in South Africa operates multiple 132kV substations serving industrial and residential areas. With increasing lightning activity during summer storms, their aging earthing systems posed significant safety risks.
Challenge
The existing grounding infrastructure was over 15 years old, with corroded copper earth rods and inadequate surge protection. Lightning strikes had caused equipment damage and power outages, affecting thousands of customers and costing millions in repairs.

Our solution
Wisetree provided a comprehensive lightning protection upgrade package:
Copper Earth Rods (ER Series): High-conductivity copper-bonded rods for deep earth termination
Earth Rod Clamps (RCC Series): Secure mechanical connections for grounding network
Surge Protective Devices (SPD): Class I+II surge arresters for transformer protection
Copper Cable Lugs (GTL/GTY): Reliable terminal connections for grounding conductors
Implementation: Our engineering team conducted on-site soil resistivity testing and designed a custom earthing grid layout. Products were delivered within 4 weeks, and installation completed in 6 days with local contractor support.
Results:
-
01
All connections tested for 25-year design life
-
02
Earthing system achieved <10Ω resistance (exceeding VDE 0100 requirement)
-
03
Junction boxes passed IP68 waterproof certification
-
04
Project commissioned on schedule, now generating 60GWh annually
-
